Symptoms of Hypothyroidism According Age Groups

People often doubt whether they have thyroid gland disorder or not. Hypothyroidism is a thyroid gland dysfunction. If hypothyroidism is present it means that the thyroid gland of a person produces hormones in abnormally low quantity. Since thyroid hormones participate in quite a number of processes that take part inside the body of a person, the amount in which they are produced is essential for healthy living.

Symptoms of underactive thyroid gland often differ according to the age of a person. Here, in this article, I will provide with the most basic symptoms according to the age groups.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism in infants may be:

  • Slow Growth
  • No Desire To Get Feed
  • Excessive Tiredness
  • Constipation
  • Yellow Discoloration of the Skin and Eyes

Symptoms in children (3-12 years) may include:

  • Poor Performance at School
  • Less Desire to Communicate

We can divide hypothyroidism symptoms in adults into two parts: 1) Early Symptoms and 2) Later Symptoms. The word “early” in the “Early Symptoms” indicates that this symptoms take place at the early stage of hypothyroidism while “Later Symptoms” are more severe. They take place if hypothyroidism has gone beyond its early stages and has developed into a complicated disease.

Here are the early symptoms:

  • Easily getting exhausted. Continuos fatigue without real cause.
  • Constipation.
  • Poor tolerance to cold temperatures.
  • Numbness of the hands and pain at the wrists.

Here are the later, more severe, symptoms:

  • Loss of Appetite
  • Unusual Weight Gain Without any Causes

  • Hair Loss
  • Depression Without any Real Reason
  • Irregularities in Menstrual Cycle

These are the most wide-spread symptoms of hypothyroidism according to the age groups. Of course, if just one of the above stated symptoms are present, it does not definitely mean that your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones. However, if two or more symptoms are present together, there is every likelihood that you have thyroid gland dysfunction.
